Following the sentencing of a Javanese laborer, Mawardi, to 20 years in prison for his central role in the murder of Japanese tourist Hiromi Shimada on Christmas Day 2009 [See: Man Who Killed Japanese Woman Gets 20 Year Sentence], his accomplice in the homicide, Abdurrahman (21), has been sentenced to 10 years of prison.
According to Beritabali.com, the sentence was handed down by the Denpasar District Court of Thursday, September 23, 2010, and read by the lead judge Putu Suika. The sentence was three years less than the 13 years requested by prosecutors.
Judge Suika, in rendering his sentence, found the young laborer guilty of assisting in the murder of the Japanese woman and for trying to rape the woman. In handing down the lesser sentence, the judge said the polite demeanor of the accused and a clean criminal record prior to the murder warranted some degree of leniency. On the other hand, the judge said that weighing against the man's favor was the consideration that his criminal behavior had done considerable damage to Bali's reputation as a world tourism destination.
Mawardi (31), the man found to have played the key role in the murder, was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in a separate trial that ended in late August 2009.
The two men robbed the Japanese woman, killed her and attempted to rape her at the time of her death.
