Scores of mature trees along main roads in Kuta, Bali are disappearing, cut down or drying up and dying. NusaBali reports that these tree were apparently destroyed intentionally by "unknown" elements who stripped the bark from the trees' trunks and injected the trees with a powerful herbicide.

The crime against nature and Bali's environment was confirmed by a team headed by the chief of Badung's Parks and Hygiene Service, Komang Suantara, who toured the area on Tuesday, November 2, 2010.

Sunatara said the sabotaged trees were discovered in three separate roadside locations: Jalan Dewi Sartika in front of the Hotel Discovery Kartika Plaza; Jalan Waringin Tuban in Kuta surrounding the Gatot Kaca monument; and in front of the Hotel Puri Nusantara on Jalan Raya Tuban in Kuta.

Authorities also found that trees had been cleared away on Bali's main Bypass artery in Jimbaran. In that case, unlike the others, the perpetrator was the State Power Board (PLN) who claimed the shade trees had become too tall and posed a threat to electrical cables in the area.

Sunatara said that many shade trees planted in 1992 along Bali's main roads have been destroyed by "certain individuals" who have stripped bark and injected the trees with deadly poisons.

The head of Bali's Parks Department (DKP), Putu Eka Mertawan, said the irresponsible act of those who killed the trees represented a direct assault on the "Bali Green and Clean" program of the Badung regency.

Mertawan pledged his office would investigate and find out who was responsible for destroying the trees in order that they can be brought to justice under provincial regulations.
