In response to numerous complaints for local citizens regarding the prolonged construction process for Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra, the provincial government of Bali conducted an inspection of the road construction project on Thursday, November 11, 2010.
According to Bisnis Bali, project developers are optimistic that the 10.79 kilometer road segment connecting Tohpati and Kusamba kilometers will be completed by February 2011. The second phase of the road covering the 8.2 kilometer distance between Kusamba and Lebih is scheduled for completion in February 2012.
The head of the road and bridge building division of the Denpasar government, Riel Mantik, told the press that the current road project is running behind schedule with only 76.9% completed, against a projected 89.73% completion rate at this point in time. He blamed technical difference between contractors, consultants and workers together with local weather conditions as causing the delays.
The spokesman for the provincial government of Bali has called for the publics cooperating and patience while construction on the new road continues.
The total cost of the road work is put at Rp. 180.8 billion (US$19.65 million) for the initial 10.79 kilometers and Rp. 175.61 billion (US$19.1 million) for the remaining 8.2 kilometers. 11 percent of the total cost of Rp. 356.41 billion (US$38.74 million) of the project is being paid from the National Budget. The Australian government has provided soft loans in support of the project totaling Rp. 317.22 billion (US$34.5 million).
