(12/4/2010)

The stabbing death of a 19-year-old Balinese, that was according to one report committed by a drunken security guard at the Bounty Disco, has once again contributed to Kuta's reputation for danger and criminality.

Beritabali.com carried two versions in circulation regarding the incident that cost the young man's life.

The first version had the victim, Wayan Kayun, entering the disco at 1:30 am on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, where a security guard purportedly refused the 19-year-entrance because of his age and lack of an entry ticket. The boy was said to have persistently tried to enter the disco resulting in him being pursued to a nearby parking area wear he was beaten by a security guard. Alarmed by the altercation, some of the guests at the popular disco left the premises

The bloodied boy was said to have tried to escape the guards only to be stabbed repeatedly in the back by the guard, dying before he could be rushed to a nearby hospital.

A unnamed source who witnessed the incident told the press that the guard who stabbed the boy was drunk at the time of the attack.

A second version of events places the beating and stabbing as occurring on the floor of the disco and beginning when the guard and the ill-fated boy bumped into each other on the dance floor, precipitating a fight.

Apparently both military and police officials present in the Bounty Disco were unable or unwilling to halt the fight which only ended when the security guard fatally stabbed the victim.

Police have taken the security guard, identified only by the initials AR, into custody and are refusing to comment on which of the two versions of the attack actually occurred. Meanwhile the guard remains in custody where he is being interrogated by police at the Kuta precinct house.

This is not the first fatality attributed to violence at The Bounty. A 23-year-old New Zealand man was killed when he was brutalized by security guards at the nightspot in April 2009 [See: Kiwi Visitor Dies in Bar Brawl].
