A Balanced Brain Through Art

I Made Windu Segara Senet at Ganesha Gallery at Four Seasons Resort Jimbaran in Bali January 6-17, 2011.

(12/19/2010)

"Imagine when the powers of rational and creative mind are united within a frame in a just, balanced and harmonious manner. This partnership would result in an incredible work of art that would fulfill and complete all our needs."

The theme of January 2011exhibition by young Balinese artist I Made Windu Segara Senet is linked to the discovery that the human brain is split in two distinct halves, each controlling different aspects of the human character. The left, which controls the right side of the body, is the centre of analytical abilities including mathematics, rational thinking and logic. This contrasts the right side of the brain, which controls the left side of the body that manages creativity, emotions and dreams. Like the Balinese religion which seeks to maintain balance between numerous polar opposites – the micro and macro cosmos; the natural and the supernatural; the heavens and the earth, the earth and the underworld; the visible and invisible – Senet similarly proposes using art to achieve balance in life.

Senet's aim is to bring awareness of art and its benefits to a larger public. He is on a personal crusade to prove that art is the equal to science and that together the rational and creative have a synergy that can bring about miracles.

In many ways, his paintings can be seen as miracles of the balance that he so desperately seeks. There is the fury and splendor of Jackson Pollack and abstract expressionism that give the hope of liberation. Balinese figures – the demon-borne Barong Kek, witches and others – sometimes lurk in the shadows - reminders of our fears and apprehensions. They, in turn, show the giddy if not reckless optimism of youth, talent and idealism.

Winner of numerous awards for his caricatures and paintings, Senet, is currently studying medicine at Bali's prestigious Udayana University.

A man of obviously diverse interests and goals, Senet is charged with the energy of his generation and culture, seeking for much more than mere commercial success.

Art has touched his life and transformed him. His aim is to share that joy of creative endeavor with the world. Combining art with his chose field of study in medicine, Senet dedicates his talents in both mediums extending healing that will benefit all.
