Bali police have deployed 9,000 personnel over the current Christmas and New Year's period to ensure the peace and safeguard public order.
The deployment, representing two-thirds of available manpower among Bali's police force, are on station at flash-points which cover areas where the public gather and other locations subject to potential unrest. Among those areas receiving special attention are places of worship and all air and sea gateways to Bali.
Kompas.com quotes the spokesman for the Bali police, Gede Sugianyar Dwi Putra, as saying, "personnel are guarding the entry points at the ports of Gilimanuk and Padang Bai where police are inspecting all vehicles entering and leaving Bali.
Peace was maintained over the Christmas period with extra police guards on duty at 273 Christian places of worship across Bali.
