Hard to Swallow with a Bitter Aftertaste

Thai Woman Facing Possible Death Sentence for Trying to Smuggle Methamphetamine into Bali in Her Digestive System.

Bali News: Hard to Swallow with a Bitter Aftertaste

(1/17/2011)

A 28-year-old Thai woman, JIP Jampasuk, was arrested at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport on Sunday, January 9, 2011, caught in the act while attempting to smuggle 428 grams of methamphetamine into the country.

The woman arrived form Bangkok onThai Airways flight number 431.

According to Kompas.com, officials thought the young woman was exceedingly nervous when passing though the custom's inspection process, prompting officials to detain the woman and bring her to a local medical facility where she underwent a CT Scan revealing a quantity of drugs concealed in rubberized capsules lodged in her digestive tract.

Confronted with the medical images, the woman admitted to officials that she had swallowed the drug containers in an attempt to smuggle them into Indonesia. Placed under medical supervision, 428 grams of drugs were eventually retrieved from her alimentary tract over the following days and then entered as evidence for her coming trial.

The woman told investigators that the drugs, with an estimated value of Rp. 856 million (US$95,000), were given to her in Thailand by a Nigerian named Steve.

When eventually charged under the 2009 anti-narcotic laws the woman could face a maximum punishment of death before a firing squad.
