(2/19/2011)

Bali Post reports that 62.73 kilometers of provincial roads in the Badung regency of Bali are classified as being in poor condition, demanding substantial and urgent repair. Because of increasing level of complaints, mishaps and possible fall-out negatively impacting the tourism sector - the Badung House of Representatives (DPRD-Badung) is promising to undertake repairs.

A report compiled by the Badung administration notes repairs are needed on the following roads: Denpasar-Plaga (48 kilometers), Kerobokan-Munggu (5 kilometers), Jimbaran to Pura Luhur Uluwatu (12.73 kilometers) and Mambai-Kengetan (5 kilometers). Allocations of funds to repair these road segment have been included in the Bali provincial budget for 2011.

Legislators from the DPRD-Badung have called on the provincial government to be more proactive in addressing the maintenance of essential infrastructure elements, such as roads and highways. Their protests reflect mounting anger among local citizen groups who have recently started planting banana trees in large potholes on major roads as a means of trying to embarrass public officials into action.

Legislators are also calling for strict enforcement of tonnage limitations on trucks traveling Bali's roads, blaming overloaded truck as a major contributing cause of the poor state of many roads in the province.
