For almost three months the fishing communities along Kuta beach have stayed ashore, refusing to set sail. NusaBali reports that fishing boats at Kedonganan and Kelian Kuta beach are idle and parked along the shore. Fisherman are choosing to stay ashore because of bad weather conditions and reduced fish populations in the waters adjacent to Bali's western shore.

Stuck ashore their income has tumbled dramatically. In order to obtain money for their families daily needs fisherman are offering tourist boat rides or fishing expeditions in the areas close to shore.

Senak Sonal (35) a fisherman from Kedonganan complained: "It's suddenly come to this. It's different from the condition one year ago. I now earn only between Rp. 20,000 Ė Rp. 30,000 (US$2.25 Ė US$3.40) a day which is just enough to eat for a single day."

Other fishermen confirmed to the press that fish harvest have become very sparse. Because of the lack of fish captured by Bali-based fishermen, the demand for seafood is now being met by seafood supplies coming from ports in East Java and Madura.

Said Sarijo, a fisherman who has lived in Kedonganan since 1967: "The fishing is quiet; The waves are big; and the wind and rain have frightened fishermen who won't go to sea."

Local fishermen told the press they are concerned for the fate of their fishing fleet if the current bad weather continues into the future.
