The Horniman Museum and Gardens in London is hosting "Bali: Dancing for the Gods" - an exhibition celebrating Balinese dance in photos, films, artifacts and live demonstrations through January 8, 2012.

The exhibition was opened on Saturday, April 16, 2011, by the Ambassador of Indonesia to the U.K and Ireland, Yuri O. Thamron, who said he hoped the exhibition would expose the beauty and richness of Indonesian culture to the people of the United Kingdom. Ambassador Thamron reminded those attending the opening that 2011 represents the 200th anniversary of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles' arrival in Indonesia and the birth of the now centuries old fascination with Indonesian culture instigated by Raffles with the publication of "A History of Java."

"Bali: Dancing for the Gods"

The exhibition includes pictures and motion-pictures of Balinese dance taken in the 1930s by Beryl de Zoete, Balinese dance paraphernalia and costumes, and a gamelan orchestra. Throughout the course of the months-long event workshops on Balinese music and dance together with sessions of traditional storytelling will be conducted for young visitors to the museum.

A main theme of the Horniman Museum's current exhibition is how moral values and respect for the environment are passed on to coming generations through the stories and dance of Balinese Hinduism.

In 1961, the Museum receives a gift of 4,000 priceless films and photographs from Beryl de Zoete, who, together with Walter Spies, authored the still definite catalog of Balinese dance and Music "Dance and Drama in Bali." The photos and films are a central part of the current exhibition in London.

"Bali: Dancing for the God" runs through January 8, 2012.
