Jakarta Globe reports that 35-year-old Morita Yuki of Japan has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for his failed attempt to smuggle 5.9 kilograms of hashish into Bali in November of 2010.
The illegal cash of drugs had an estimated street value of US$410,000 and was concealed in a suitcase brought by the Japanese.
Following a pattern of extending higher sentences than that requested by public prosecutors, Yuki was given 18 years imprisonment, 3 more years more than the punishment sought in the prosecutors petition to the Court.
Morita was also fined Rp 5 billion ($555,000). Failure to pay this amount will add one more year to his sentence.
Several days earlier a 43-year-old Australian man also received an18-year sentence for smuggling 1.7 kilograms of methamphetamines into Bali.
