Based on data from the Central Statistic Bureau (BPS), Bali's population ballooned by 24% in the decade from 2000 to 2010.
This growth of rate, averaging 2.37% annually, was largely attributable to the migration of people to Bali from other islands in search of employment opportunities.
Demonstrating the trend of new residents in search of jobs is the fact that the highest rates of decadal population growth occurred in the tourism and business centers of Badung (57%), Denpasar (48%) and Gianyar (20%).
Meanwhile, the lowest rates of grow over the past decade took place in Karangasem (10%), Klungkung (10%), Bangli (11%), Tabanan (12%), Buleleng (12%) and Jembrana (13%).
Bali's total population at the end of 2010 stood at 3.89 million. If the current rate of growth persists Bali will have a population of 4.83 million in 2020 and more than 9.2 million by 2050.
