Bali in Black and White

Ubud’s Amandari Resort, in collaboration with French Cinémathèque de la Danse, will again host a rare viewing of vintage films - primarily about Bali at the Watilan Pura Kedewatan in Ubud.

Among the films to be shown over four day from June 25-29, 2011:

”Sacred & Secret” – Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.

The film offers a revealing glimpse into the transcendent life and occult ceremonies of the Balinese. The film show the island’s secret spiritual life and unique forms of ancient Hindu-Buddhist spirituality, recording rituals of prayer, trance, dance and rites of passage from birth to marriage and cremation.

”Goona-Goona” – Monday, June 27, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.

An authentic 1930 melodrama of the island of Bali directed by André Roosevelt and Armand Denis. First screened in New York in the 1930s, the film , set in Bali, was an immediate success. The term “Goona Goona” became the synonymous of “That Old Black Magic,” immortalized by the famous Frank Sinatra hit of that name.

”Island of Bali” – Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.

A 1933 film directed by Miguel Covarrubias. This film is an edited compilation of footage taken by the director’s wife, Rosa Covarrubias, in 1930 and in 1937. It covers many aspects of Balinese life following the chapters of the acclaimed book Island of Bali, which was a bestseller in the United States before World War II.

”Jazz and Tap Dance Mélange” – Wednesday, June 29

A dynamic compilation of jazz and tap dances, featuring the best of dance geniuses and musicians from a bygone era. This edited compilation features excerpts from: Symphony in Black, by Fred Waller (1935); King Cole Trio, by Will Cowan (1950); Rufus Jones for President, by Roy Mack (1933); and A Rhapsody in Black and Blue, by Aubrey Scotto (1932).
