Scientists from the Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI) say that Bali’s northernmost coats could fall victim to a nine-meter-high tsunami if a significant shift takes place in the geological plates of Flores, Bali and Java.

As reported by The Jakarta Post, Herry Harjono, a geology professor attending a program on earthquake simulation in Bali, said: “The Flores Thrust has been moving towards the two islands in an arc that could probably cause a huge tremor. We have detected movement of the Flores Thrust three times and the {movement) has always triggered major earthquakes in the affected areas.”

A 1976 earthquake in Siririt village in Buleleng, North Bali, caused widespread destruction and deaths. Because the epicenter was land based, no tsunami resulted which would have caused even more widespread devastation.

Other major earthquakes affected Lombok in 1979 and North Flores (Maumere) in 1992.

The geologist characterized the cycling of the Flores Thrust as occurring in  30-year cycles.

Buleleng has 144 kilometers of coastline that are subject to erosion and, in the event of an earthquake, a tsunami.

The Buleleng government carries out drills and community awareness programs to make people aware of the threat and dangers posed by the natural environment.

Unlike the southern parts of the island, north Bali is not equipped with a tsunami warning system that would provide a potential early warning for people to take refuge to higher ground in the event of the detection of an approaching tsunami.
