For al intents and purposes celebrated as an “unofficial holiday” in Australia, the annual running of the Melbourne Cup sees that nation grind to a halt as all eyes turn to the horse race action at Flemington Racecourse for a contest between three-year-old vying for AU$6 million in purses.
This year’s running of the Melbourne Cup
will mark the 151st anniversary of a race first held in 1861
The excitement of race day and this esteemed Melbourne sporting tradition is also celebrated each year in Bali, Indonesia where expatriate Australians and friends gather to share in the festivities underway in far away Victoria.
Melbourne Cup 2011
in Bali will be celebrated at the Sanur Paradise Plaza Hotel
where a live satellite action projected on a large screen will display all the race action. And, as in years past, participants are urged to come dressed for the races with ladies often sporting hats that set new and outlandish standards for the millinery world.
Doors open at 10:00 a.m. in the Denpasar Room of the Sanur Paradise Plaza Hotel
where a gate pass of Rp. 350,000 (US$39) earns admission to a day of fun, fashion, sweeps, a Brett’s Tote
, live book, welcome glass of Artisan Chardonnay
, three-course luncheon and live broadcast of the pre-race festivities and the actual race set to start at 12:00 noon Bali time.
The food on offer will include a range of Australian favorites, including roast lamb, baked fish, beef Wellington, lamingtons and Pavlovas.
