Bali Nine’s Myuran Sukumaran Files Formal Request for Presidential Remission of Death Sentence

Bali News: Dodging Bullets

(7/13/2012)

Drug smuggler Myuran Sukumaran, the man depicted by the media as “the enforcer” among the infamous  “Bali Nine,” has formally asked for a remission of his death sentence from Indonesia’s president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The Denpasar District Court sentenced Sukumaran to death before a firing squad on February 14, 2006 after being found guilty of possession, with three others, of heroin in a Kuta hotel room.

Sukurmaran and Andrew Chan were depicted by prosecutors on the co-ringleaders in smuggling drugs from Bali to Australia.

The “Bali Nine” is the name given to nine Australians arrested in connection with the efforts to smuggle 8.2 kilograms of heroin via Bali’s airport in 2005. Five members of the conspiracy were arrested at Bali’s airport while 4 associates were arrested later in Kuta.

Chan has filed his petition for remission of the death sentence with the President last month.

Sukarman and Chan are the last two of the “Bali Nine” still under sentence of death. The remaining seven members are in prison, facing long prison sentences, including life imprisonment.
