Two people died in landslide that occurred on the main roadway connecting Bali’s northern capital of Singaraja and Bedugul on Tuesday afternoon, February 19, 2013.

The deaths took place at kilometer 15 near the village of Gitgit, The bodies of two men, both from Gitgit, Gede Muliawan Temaja (27) and Gede Mertada (35), were found in a ravine, a distance from the landslide on Wednesday morning where they had been swept along by mud and flood waters.

The men lost their lives while working with members of their community trying to clear away soil and debris deposited on the highway by landslides. The first landslide took place at around 5:30 pm during a torrential downpour that started at mid-day. While working on clearing the road, a second landslide at 6:00 pm swept 10 local citizens off the road and into the nearby ravine. 8 of the 10 men survived with Muliawan and Metada losing their lives in the incident.

The road was returned to service on Wednesday, the day following the landslide.
