Bali police have released an American expatriate in Bali after holding her for three days questioning on suspicion of possessing two ecstasy pills.

Police admitted that there was insufficient evidence to link Suzan Johnson with the illegal drugs found in her parked car on Monday, March. 5, 2013.

Quoted by NusaBali, I Wayan Suarda of the anti-narcotics division of the Denpasar police, said on Sunday, March 10, 2013, said: “We have released (Johnson) due to a lack of evidence."

In releasing Johnson, Suarda dismissed suggestions that the American woman had been crudely set up by a business rival collaborating with the police. “There was no set up,” he insisted.

Armed officers dressed in black swooped down upon Johnson, who had been in Singapore for several days renewing her immigration permits, as she walked to her parked car near the airport. Refusing police orders to enter the car and drive it to the police station, Johnson called her lawyer who was holding the keys to her car during her stay in Singapore to assist police in bringing the car to the police station.

In the end, police were unable to demonstrate Johnson's control and possession of the vehicle in which the drugs were "found" in the days immediately prior to it's seizure by police.

Police claim they had inspected the parked car, found drugs wrapped in newspaper near the gearshift and then waited for Johnson’s return to make an arrest.

It is not clear what motivated police to inspect a locked car, searching for drugs.
