As reported by Balidiscovery.com, the Joger “Factory of Word” outlet in Baturiti has closed its doors, refusing requests for a 100% increase in “donation” paid to the local banjar or community association. [See: At a Loss for Words] .

In a follow-up report from DenPost, it now appears that the closure of the popular souvenir shop is having widespread economic effects as visitors to the area and surrounding shops have dropped dramatically following the shops closure and shrouding of its roadside sign by the Joger's owner.

J
oger closed when the Banjar Adat Luwes asked a monthly cash contribution of Rp. 1.5 million (US$150) – a figure twice the amount paid in the past.

In an effort to reopen a dialogue with Joger, the banjar has returned the shop’s contribution paid for January and February 2013 and is labeling the entire incident a misunderstanding.

The village secretary for Banjar Adat Luwes, I Ketut Landra, told DenPost that the people of the village had never called for the closure of the Joger location, acknowledging, at the same time, the significant contribution made by the company to the local economy, including jobs for residents of the area.

Speaking on behalf of the village, Landra said: “There is still the opportunity for a consensus to be achieved. We hope Joger will reopen in Luwus (Baturiti) and continue to maintain good relations with the community.”

A similar sentiment was expressed by Mudiana, a local shopkeeper working  across the road from Joger. Mudiana said: “It’s just been two days since Joger closed and it feels so quiet, and the effect on other shops is the same. For this reason, we are writing to Joger urging them to reopen their location. The effect is being felt by local workers.”

Separately, Joger has revealed a long list of "donations" that they have been compelled to pay linked to routine renewal of licenses and permits for their business. In the past Joger has made substantial contributions to schools near the Baturiti shop.
