DenPost reports that enforcement officers from the Tabanan Transportation Authority (Dishub) in cooperation with officers from the Tabanan Police precinct set up a checkpoint for passing trucks on Jalan By Pass Dr. Ir. Soekarno on Wednesday, April 10, 2013.

Those working the roadblocks selected out trucks they considered to be displaying pornographic, provocative or nonsensical art painted on the truck’s bodies.

A member of the vehicle testing division of the Tabanan Transportation Authority, I Ketut Puji Antara, said the roadside “raids” were done on the orders of their leader and formed part of a larger effort to control pornographic or extreme art found on a number of trucks and other vehicles.

“More than that, the raids are a follow-up to a circular sent by the Director General of Land Transportation aimed at controlling pornographic images and risqué slogans see on many trucks. This is also to anticipate the indirect negative results such images and writings can have on children. Finally, this will safeguard the aesthetic of vehicles using public roadways,” explained Antara.

The checkpoint operated for around one hour stating at 8:00 am during which officials cited 14 vehicles, most of which were trucks and public mini-buses with pictures of scantily clad women in provocative poses.

One trucks stopped was driven by Ketut Suarka (49) from Bantas in Tabanan. On the front cab of his truck is displayed a painting of a women wearing transparent garments. When challenged about the choice of “art” displayed on his truck, Suarka said: “Gosh, I don’t know about these pictures. The truck belongs to my boss; I am only the driver."

Officials also warned other drivers deemed to be displaying “naughty” art.
Police and transportation officials issued verbal warning to drivers in their efforts to raise public awareness before taking sterner measures.
