The State News Agency Antara reports that Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) will be in Bali on September 12, 2013 to inaugurate the renovated Ngurah Rai Bali International Airport and the Benoa-Nusa Dua toll road.
The president director of PT Angkasa Pura I, Tommy Soetomo, said, “President SBY is scheduled to inaugurate the giant projects on September 12.”
The President will officiate in the opening of the new terminal at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport and Bali’s firs toll road connecting Benoa and Nusa Dua.
Tommy Soetomo described how the renovation of the Bali airport, commenced in May 2011, has consumed Rp. 3 trillion and employed four thousand laborers.
Purwanto said on Sept. 10, the arrival terminal had to be be completed before the inauguration, while the departure terminal was slated for completion on Sept. 20. Thousands of workers are busiy installing various pieces of equipment, LED television screens, telephones and electricity cables. Some are finishing the airport’s interior and exterior decor, a blend of Balinese traditional and modern design. The airport’s physical 120,000 square-meter buildings were already generally finished, Purwanto said.
The airport building stands four-story high with the first level separately housing the arrival terminals for domestic and international passengers. The second floor is dedicated to airport offices, the third level is for departing passengers and the uppermost floor reserved for VIP lounges.
Adjacent to the terminal is a multi-story car park.
Purwanto also explained how the new air terminal Bali has been built to handle 25 million passengers each year.
The Bali airport currently handles 14 million domestic and international airports each year.
At current rates of growth of 15.5% per year, the airport will reach its new handling capacity within just 5 years.
Future further expansion of the airport is made problematic by the lack of land to expand the current 285-hectare plot occupied by Bali’s sole airport.
