The Indonesian government has finally decided that the entire Miss World Contest, including the finals originally scheduled to be held in West Java, will now take place in Bali.

As reported by The Bali Post, the decision was taken following a ministerial coordination meeting in Jakarta. The decision to “isolate” the event to Bali was announced by the Coordinating Minister for the People’s Welfare Agung Laksono on Saturday, September 7, 2013.

Laksono, vice-president Boediono, the commander of the Indonesian National Police General Timur Prodopo and the deputy-minister for Tourism and the Creative Economy Sapta Nirwandar attended the Saturday meeting.

The original plans of the organizers of Miss World was to hold the international beauty pageant in a number of locations across Indonesia with the preliminary competition and judging to in Bali and the gala final evening in West Java.

Angry protests from religious fundamentalist, including threats to disrupt the proceedings, prompted the government and the organizers to localize the event in Bali. Said Laksono: “Miss World 2013 will only take place and be centered on Bali. There will be no activity outside of Bali.”

Although the actual competition and judging will be limited to Bali, the Miss World contestants will still be allowed to make visits to other parts of Indonesia during their stay, including the Borobudur temple in Central Java.

Laksono added: “I think there will be no problem if (they) visit Borobudur, treated as normal tourists. There will be no problem, but the event of Miss World will be in Bali.”

Agung Laksono said he understood the pro and contra arguments that have arisen around Indonesia’s hosting of the Miss World Contest. For this reason, he said, the Government was revising the permit issued to the organizers for the event in order that the event can go ahead.

“Hopefully all can be in accordance with the aspirations of the public while at the same time embracing the progress of Indonesian tourism. Hopefully all parties can understand and everything will go smoothly and successfully,” said Laksono.

Meanwhile, the Chief of the Indonesian Police Timur Pradopo said his officiers were ready to safeguard the Miss World Contest.

All the 130 contestants of Miss World and the organizers have arrived in Bali. The chairwoman of the affiliated Miss Indonesia competition, Liliana Tanosadibio, said on Saturday, September 7, 2013, “This is an opportunity for Indonesia to expose its natural beauty, its culture and the position of Indonesian woman to the world.”

Liliana told the press there was no hesitation or reluctance on the part of the organizers of the Miss World Contest 2013 in hosting the first competition in Indonesia. She said the Miss World has the potential of demonstrating internationally that Indonesia is safe, peaceful, beautiful and rich in resources. At the same time, she underlined that Miss World 2013 would be held in accordance with the cultural norms of Indonesia.

The chairman of the organizing committee for Miss World 2013 in Indonesia, Nana Putra, said the closing of the pageant would have the theme “Bringing Indonesia’s Beauty to the World.

The opening of the event will took place in the Mangupura Ballroom of The Westin, Nusa Dua, including leading Indonesian performing artists from both Bali and other parts of Indonesia.
