(9/20/2013)

On Thursday, September 20, 2013, the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) issued the following statement via their Facebook page in connection with their ordered closing by Bali Animal Husbandry officials:

Official Statement of BAWA

We are humbled and grateful for the thousands of messages of support from animal lovers throughout Indonesia and across the world to the reports that BAWA will be forced to close its doors.

We apologize for not updating you earlier but we have been totally immersed in trying to care for our animals, while trying to understand and co-ordinate with officials to comply with required licenses and permits due to recent changes in regulations.

BAWA is investigating the many stories circulating and will update you as we learn more. We are trying to understand why all of a sudden animal welfare organizations have been raided in Bali and requested to comply with regulations within impossible time frames.

We receive calls every hour with reports of sick and injured animals, puppies and kittens discarded in rubbish dumps, beaches etc. and are at a loss as to why anyone would want to shut down the island’s free animal rescue service.

Please continue to report injured, orphaned and sick animals to our hotline numbers as we are putting contingency plans in place.

Rest assured we will work tirelessly to ensure that all animals are free of suffering on the island. We thank you for your continued support.
