The Bali Chapter of the Indonesia Red Cross (PMI) has prepared 5,000 sacks of blood donations, including rhesus positive and rhesus negative blood, on the eve of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit (APEC) to be held in Bali October 1-9, 2013.

The head of Health Services for PMI in Bali, Eko Wardani, told the State News Agency Antara on Wednesday, September 26, 2013, “All blood types, including rare rhesus, are prepared and we also have available an association of foreign rare blood donors living in Bali.”

As the date for the APEC Conference draws near, Wardani confirmed that PMI would hold coordinating meetings reviewing blood storage and distribution with the Sanglah General Hospital, BIMC Hospital and the Siloam Hospital.

In the case of a medical emergency, should a shortage of blood occur coordination would take place between the three hospitals to send any needed supply of blood immediately to the venue of the APEC Summit.

“We have put volunteers on alert to dispatch donated blood, if needed,” said Wardani.

Eko Wardani underlined that 5 ambulances operated by PMI Badung and PMI Denpasar have been fully equipped to an international standard and will be on stand-by 24 hours a day in support of the APEC Conference.

The Indonesia Red Cross (PMI) also have 200 trained Disaster Relief Volunteers (SATGANA) ready to respond to any crisis.

In closing, Wardani said: “The PMI has established an disaster relief command post open 24 hours a day during the APEC Summit in Nusa Dua, while at the same time increasing the level of cross communication between PMI volunteers in every regency.”
