Bali’s first fatality in connection with the operation of Bali’s first toll road has taken place not on the roadway, but under the highway.
A Balinese man fishing beneath the new Mandara Toll Road drowned late on the afternoon on Sunday, October 20, 2013. I Made Suka Prabudita Wasesa of Batubulan, Gianyar, Bali, was pulled out to sea by tides and current when fishing with a group of friends.
DenPost reports that three days after the incident the man’s body had yet to be discovered.
According to a friend of Wasesa, Nyoman Suparta (40), the group of fishermen numbered 5 people. Wading out to sea among the pylons supporting the roadway, the men reached a large pool some 500 meters from the toll way entrance.
When the men tried to wade across the deeper pool, Wasesa apparently slipped and was pulled away by the receding tide.
Police continue to search for the man’s body.
