Ring Around the Rigmarole

Badung Government Seeking US$26 million to Build a Tanjung Benoa Ring Road in Baliís South

(11/15/2013) A preliminary feasibility study for a ring road encircling the Tanjung Benoa Peninsula of South Bali has been completed.

The study estimates for building the one-way road that would circle through the popular accommodation, dining, shopping and water sports area are put at Rp. 300 billion (US$26 million).

The Badung Regency administration is now busily trying to find a way to fund the project.

As reported by The Bali Post, the head of Public Works and Water Supply for Badung, Ida Bagus Surya Suamba, said on Sunday, November 10, 2013, that the results of the study will soon delivered to the Regent for his comments and approval. Once approved by the Regent, the next step would be the execution of a detailed engineering design that would be completed in 2014 before actual construction commences in 2015.

Suamba said the need for a Tanjung Benoa ring road was made urgent by the rapid pace of development in the area and the severe traffic congestion now found on Jalan Pratama.

The high density of physical development on the peninsula makes land acquisition for the proposed ring road extremely problematic. As a result, current plans are to use the western beach on the peninsula to create a 30-meter wide roadway.

The options being explored to finance the proposed road are funding by the Regency of Badung, funding from the Central Government or a joint operation with private interests operating as a toll road.
