Bali Conservation Officials Seize Four Endangered Birds at Tanah Lot Temple Complex. Nyoman Wandi Could Face Five Years in Prison and Fines for Possessing Endangered Animals.

(11/15/2013) The Bali Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has seized four endangered birds near the famous Tanah Lot Temple Complex in Tabanan, West Bali.

The State News Agency Antara reports that the an investigator from the BKSDA, Dewa Gede Yoga, said the four birds confiscated were a Sulfur-Crested Cockatoo, an eagle, Sumba Hornbill and a Helmeted Friarbird.

The four birds were taken from I Nyoman Wandi from Dukuh Banjar in the village of Beraban in Tabanan.

According to Yoga, Wandi was displaying the birds as an added attraction at the Tanah Lot Complex, charging visitors to pose for photographs with the endangered fowl.

The BKSDA officials said the owner of the birds and the birds were under surveillance for an extended period before a decision was finally made to seize the endangered bird.

The birds are now in the protective custody of the BKSDA who are examining how to return the birds to the wild.
