Curbing Corruption at Baliís Airport

Independent Monitoring and More Service Counters for Immigration at Baliís Airport Urged by Tourism Promotion Board

(12/6/2013) A member of the Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI), Mangku Nyoman Kandia, told Bisnis Bali on Monday, December 2, 2013, the government must take steps to reduce the possibility of corruption by immigration and customs officers at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport while, at the same time, reducing the length immigration queues.

Kandia said incidents of illegal bribes and fees at the airport can be thwarted by the installation of closed circuit cameras supervising customs and immigration counters at the Bali airport.

The BPPI officials said control and supervision of custom and immigration at the airport must be undertaken by a separate and independent body that answers to the Ngurah Rai Airport Authority.

Kandia explained that the installation of closed circuit cameras are needed to answer the many complaints from tourists regarding illegal fees sought by customs and immigration officials. He specifically mentioned complaints from Chinese and Dutch tourists about illegal levies at Ngurah Rai.

He went on to detail the complaints received from tourists regarding long immigration queues at Bali’s airport. Kandia feels the long lines at Bali’s airport are much longer and unlike those encountered at other international airports.

He blamed the long queues at Bali’s airport on the limited number of immigration counters. Kandia compared the 4-5 counters in operation in Bali with the 20 immigration service counters serving arriving passengers at Singapore’s airport.

With the recent renovation of Bali’s airport, Mangku Nyoman Kandia said now is the time to add more counters and more immigration staff to improve service to Bali visitors.
