Fireworks, Drunken Driving and a Stabbing Sent People to Hospital During Baliís Celebration of New Years Eve

(1/3/2014) The transition from 2013 to 2014 saw a flurry of firework and stabbing injuries, repeating a yearly pattern at the casualty ward of Bali’s Sanglah General Hospital.

Bali Post quotes the head of the emergency room at the hospital, Dr. Krishna Wibawa, who counted 15 firework-related injuries, 4 traffic accidents due to drunken driving and 1 stabbing during the night of New Year’s revelry.

“Five patients were warded for firework injuries with most suffering wounds to the eyes and hands,” said Dr. Krishna.

Pande Agus Indrawan (13) was admitted with a broken thumb on his left hand due to explosives. The boy’s father said the injury happened near midnight when a series of 12 fireworks were picked up in the process of exploding.

Doctors performed emergency surgery on the boy who is expected to make a complete recovery in three months.

Wira Pratama of Kampial, Nusa Dua also suffered significant injuries to his left hand due to contact with explosives.

Also hospitalized with explosive wounds were Nadia (3) from Jalan Drupadi, Leci fro Jalan Tukad Badung and Sudiatmika (27) of Jalan Wibisana Barat.

Pipim and Ina who were riding in tandem on a motorcycle fell while driving in a drunken condition on Jalan Tukad Badung. Both suffered significant head injuries.

Ipan Fausi (22) of Canggu and Komang Sumetana (27) of Gianyar were also hospitalized after they tried to conduct a road race on motorcycles while intoxicated.
