Swede Faces Possible Death Penalty for Trying to Bring 3.1 Kilograms of Narcotics to Bali

(1/13/2014) Suara Pembaruan reports that a 60-year-old Swedish citizen, Lindgren, was arrested at Jakartaís Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Monday, December 30, 2013, carrying 3.1 kilograms if methamphetamines destined for Bali.

A policeman from the narcotic criminal division of the national police, Brigadier General Arman Depari, said the drugs were intended to be sent directly to Bali for New Yearís celebrations.

Arman said the drugs were concealed in packets taped to Lingdrenís body. Preliminary investigations indicate the drugs originated from Dakar, Senegal, where they were purchased for US$2,000.

Police say the arrest traces back to suspicious behavior by the Swede on his arrival in Jakarta. This led to a thorough search by customís officers.

The Swede now faces a possible sentence of death or a minimum prison term of 20 years.
