Indonesia Begins Printing Cigarette Packages with Graphic Health Warnings

(6/30/2014) Indonesian cigarette manufacturers, in accordance with national law, have begun printing graphic medical photographs depicting the effects on various human organs of prolonged smoking.

New packages with the new pictures were printed on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, with the vote still out on whether or not such warnings will curb the enormous appetite of Indonesians for cigarettes in a country where one in five persons smokes.

Undeterred by the introduction of graphic warnings and laws barring smoking in public places, the corporate secretary of Wismilak Inti Makmur - one of Indonesia's largest domestic tobacco comanies, Surjanto Yasaputera, reports his company remains committed to increasing cigarette sales by 20-25% in 2014.

The World Health Organization blames between 6-8 million deaths per year on cigarette smoking.
