More Anti-reclamation Protests

Sanur Traffic Brought to a Standstill by Anti-Reclamation Protests

(5/14/2017) Thousands of Demonstrators gathered at the Catus Pata Monument on the Bypass highway in Sanur, Bali on Sunday, May 7, 2016, to protest once again plans for a massive reclamation project in Benoa Bay under the banners of ForBALI and “Intaran Takes Action.”

The Catus Pata intersection is located in the village of Intaran with the demonstration at the location causing widespread gridlock in the Sanur area of Bali.

NusaBali said the group gathered on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm and commenced a long march down Jalan Danau Buyan and filling the Catus Pata Desa Adat intersection at Intaran.

The crowds carried tradition Ogoh-ogoh statues and were accompanied by belaganjur marching orchestras as they brought traffic traveling from every direction to a standstill.

The demonstrators said they were restating their opposition to the Benoa Bay reclamation project, restating the rejection of the mega-project by communities surrounding the harbor, and rejecting biased police interference in the ForBALI protest.

The traditional head of the Intaran community, AA Kompyang Raka, proclaimed an association of 19 surrounding banjars united in their opposition to the reclamation of Benoa Bay.

The Sanur protest gathering ended after two hours with a free concert featuring top local bands.
