Making a Spectacle

Australian Gets Three Months and 15 Days in Prison for Stealing Sunglasses from a Bali Duty-Free Shop

(11/12/2017) An Australian tourist, Thomas William Harman (31), was found guilty of shoplifting from a shop in the departure lounge of Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport and sentenced to 3 months and 15 days in jail.

Because Harman had already spent 3 months and 10 days in prison for stealing a $400 pair of sunglasses from a duty-free shop was left with only 5 more days to serve before his eventual deportation from Indonesia.

The Australian got off lightly for his crime and could have been sentenced to a maximum of 5 years for theft.

Possibly playing a role the in leniency of the sentence given to Harman was his apology offered to the people of Indonesia and his readiness to pay restitution for the stolen sunglasses several times over.
