Got your Goat

Road Side Stockades of Goats Herald Coming Idul Adha Celebrations

(10/29/2012) As Indonesia approaches the national holiday of Hari Raya Idul Adha 10 Zulhijjah 1433 H that falls on Friday, October 26, 2012, many roadside areas in Bali have been turned into temporary livestock stockades to supply the goats and cows that will be slaughtered on that day to commemorate the animal sacrifice offered to God by Abraham.

As seen at Pasar Kambing in Kampung Jawa on Jalan Maruti, Denpasar, a variety of goats are offered for sale. Most of the goats on sale are males, in keeping with Koranic strictures specifying that animals offered on that day should beboth  male and free of any physical defect.

Radar Bali reports that the average price for a male goat is Rp. 1.7 million (US$177) with the less desire female goats on sale for just Rp. 1.2 million (US$125).

These prices are substantially higher than in periods outside the Idul Adha holiday period.
