Garuda Indonesia to Recommence London Flights in 2013

(2/8/2013) Garuda Indonesia plans to resume scheduled air service between Jakarta and London, flying non-stop between those two destinations in the fourth quarter of 2013.

The expansion of the Indonesian air carrier’s European service is part of Garuda’s quantum leap 2011-2015 program.

Quoted by the National News Agency Antara, the Air Communications attaché at the Indonesian Embassy in London, Sahatua Simatupang, said: “Garuda has chosen Gatwick in London as its connection point to Indonesia and the rest of Southeast Asia.

In years past, Garuda has flown to Paris, Frankfurt, London and Rome. However, Garuda's only European service at this time is to Amsterdam.

Simatapung said the new London service would be reciprocal operation with an U.K. airline flying the route six times a week.

The British Prime Minister, during a recent visit to Jakarta, declared Indonesia an important partner of the United Kingdom. To this end, both countries have publicly committed to increase trade activity between the U.K. and Indonesia to 4.4 billion Pounds Sterling by 2015.

The CEO of Garuda Indonesia, Emirsyah Satar, said the new Jakarta-London route would complement the existing service by Garuda flying Jakarta-Abu Dhabi-Amsterdam. He said the new London service would be flown with brand new Boeing B-777-300ER aircraft.
