Indonesia and Australia to Increase Flights

Indonesia and Australia Sign Air Service Agreement to Increase Total Passenger Seats by 10%

(2/11/2013) The Jakarta Post reports that Indonesia and Australia have concluded bi-lateral air agreements that will permit airlines from both countries to increase the frequency of flights between the two countries.

The Indonesian Minister of Transport E.E. Mangindaan and the Australian Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Anthony Albanese signed the agreement in Australia on Thursday, February 7, 2013.

The agreement provides for flights between Jakarta, Denpasar (Bali), Makassar (South Sulawesi), Medan (North Sumatra) and
Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang S. Ervan said that the agreement would allow more slots from Jakarta; Denpasar (Bali); Makassar, South Sulawesi; Medan, North Sumatra; and Surabaya (East Java) and Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

The Air Service Agreement (ASA) jointly commits Indonesia and Australia to provide 2,500 additional seats each week, a 10% increase over the current 25,000 seats now operated between the two countries.

Garuda Indonesia is planning to resume service between Jakarta and Brisbane later this year. Meanwhile, Lion Air’s offshoot Batik Air is planning to fly between Kupang and Darwin and Bali to Adelaide later in 2013.
