Deign to Dine Locally, Please

Local Agricultural Expert Wants Indonesian Food to Dominate in Bali Hotels and Restaurants

(2/16/2013) An agricultural expert from Bali’s Udayana University Prof. Dr. Dewa Ngurah Suprapta is urging hotels and restaurants in Bali to present menus to tourists that maximize the used of local food stuffs produced on the Island.

As reported by Bisnis Bali and The Jakarta Post, Professor Suprapta asks accommodation providers and eateries in Bali to avoid presenting European menus or, for that matter, menus from other foreign climes, that require the use of imported food ingredients, in particular imported beef.

Suprapta contends that tourists visiting Bali are drawn by the Island’s unique culture and panoramic scenery and are are not necessarily seeking food that mirrors that available “back home.”

The Professor applauded steps by the government to halt the import of 13 agricultural commodities into Indonesia, including beef products, viewing such measures as necessary to revitalize the nation’s farmers.

The government’s ban on the import of beef, however,  does not apply to beef products needed as raw material for industry, hotels and restaurants.

Professor Suprapta doe not agree with these exceptions, suggesting the ban on imported beef should be absolute and apply for all sectors.

Concluding, Suprapta said Bali and Indonesia are tropical lands that do not need to prepare menus and food items found from non-tropical regions of the world.
