Lion Air Places US$24 Bn Order with Airbus

Record Purchase of Airbus Aircraft Puts Indonesian Low-Cost Carrier Lion Air at the Forefront of World Airline Industry

(3/24/2013) Indonesian air carrier Lion Air has just concluded a record purchase of aircraft from Airbus worth US$24 billion for 234 A320 and A321 aircraft.

The purchase was formalized at a ceremony held at the Élysée Palace in Paris, attended by the French President François Hollande. The purchase by the Indonesian low cost airline is the largest, both in value and number of aircraft, ever received by Airbus.

Founded in 2000 by Rusdi and Kusnan Kirana, Lion Air has purchased new aircraft that will be fitted with fuel-efficient engines that will begin being delivered in 2014.

The French President praised the Indonesian economy at the signing ceremony, citing the deal as guaranteeing more than 5,000 European jobs over the next decade.

Lion Air controls 45% of the domestic air market in Indonesia and flies to 70 destinations. They have more than 700 new aircraft on order for delivery through 2027.
