Sculpture Recalls Lives Lost in Bali Bombing

‘Remembrance’ sculpture Wins People’s Choice award at Sculpture by the Sea exhibition in West Australia

(4/1/2013) The West Australian reports that a sculpture commemorating those who died in the Bali bombings has won the People’s Choice Award at the ninth annual Sculpture by the Sea Exhibition in West Australia.

The sculpture using model turbines is entitled Mengenang, the Indonesian terms for remembrance.

Designed by Nici Long, Jed Long and Lachy Brown from Design Group Cave Urban, the winning piece features 222 windmills sitting atop bamboo poles.

The windmills are modeled on the devices commonly found in Indonesian rice fields to scare away birds. When the wind blows, each piece in the sculpture rings out a D-minor chord.

The exhibition features 71 works from twelve countries.

Approximately 220,000 people have visited the display, the most in the events’ nine-year history.
