Field Narrows in Bali Governorís Race

Winasa-Sudiartana Disqualified from Governor's Race Leaving Pastika-Sudikerta & Puspayoga-Sukrawan in Battle for Bali Leadership

(4/1/2013) As reported by Kompas.com, Winasa and Sudiartana failed to pass final verification by the Bali Election Board (KPU-Bali) in terms of demonstrating minimal support for their candidacies and filing the required applications and forms in a timely manner.

The chairman of the working committee on candidates for KPU-Bali, Ni Putu AyuWinariati, announced on Friday, March 29, 2013, “The pairing of Gede Winasa and Putu Sudiartana has failed to meet the minimum political support criterion of (party support) from 15% of the votes casts in the 2009 legislative race.”

With the disqualification of the Winasa-Sudiartana sticker, only the pairing of Made Mangku Pastika-Ketut Sudikerta and Anak Agung Ngurah Puspayoga-Dewa Sukrawan remain on the ballot.

Verification by the KPU-Bali shows that Pastika and Sudikerta enjoyed 43.36% support based on the 2009 elections from the Golkar, Partai Demokrat, Partai Hanura, PAN, PNBK, PNBK, PKPI and Gerinda.

Meanwhile, Pastika, who is the incumbent for the governor’s post and Sudikerta will be opposed by the pairing of Puspayoga-Sukrawan who have 43.64% support from the 2009 legislative vote supported by the PDIP.

Largely ignored by the PDIP party chairman, Megawait Soekarnoputri, Pastika left the party that brought him to power for his first term of office. Megawati has pledge an all out effort to see that Puspayoga-Sukrawan win in the governor’s race to take place on May 15, 2013.

Should Megawati fail in the PDIP big to unseat Pastika, many political pundits believe much of the former President’s political capital will be spent, signifying her waning influence on an island once considered her stronghold of support.
