Paradise as a Parking Lot for Planes

At least 15 Presidential Aircraft Expected to Park in Bali During APEC Summit

(9/20/2013) As many as 15 presidential aircraft carryings heads of state attending the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit (APEC) will be parked at Bali’s newly renovated airport in early October.

During the Summit on International Sustainable Development segment of the APEC Conference October 5-7, fifteen VVIP aircraft have confirmed their need for apron space in Bali.

Military officials overseeing the allocation of apron space told the State News Agency Antara that the type of aircraft to be used by four of the fifteen heads of state remain unconfirmed, complicating efforts to finalize parking plans.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has issued instructions ordering that all presidential planes be allocated apron space in Bali.

President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin have advised Indonesian authorities that each will bring two presidential aircraft to Bali.

Meanwhile, authorities in Bali confirm that space will be found to park the aircraft used by heads of state.

The Government of Indonesia has announced extended periods during October 6-9, 2013 when Bali’s airport will be closed to commercial aircraft to allow the smooth arrival and departure of VVIP aircraft.
