Seeking Permission to Land

700 Commercial Bali Flight Cancelled to Accommodate VVIPs at APEC Summit

(10/7/2013) As previously announced by the Indonesian government, Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport was closed to commercial aircraft for 8 hours on Saturday and 10 hours on Sunday, October 5 and 6, 2013, to facilitate the arrival of VVIP aircraft ferrying heads of state to Bali to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference (APEC) underway in Bali.

Similar closures were also put in place for the VVIP’s departure on October 8 & 9, 2013.

Beritabali.com reports that during the 10-hour shut-down on Sunday, October 6, 2013, eleven separate VVIP delegations arrived from Peru, the Philippines, New Zealand, Thailand, South Korea, Brunei, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Canada and Vietnam.

As a result, for an entire 10-hour period no commercial flights were allowed to land or take off from the airport, disrupting normal tourist flows and causing a share of the cancellation of an estimated 700 commercial flights throughout the APEC conference period.

Down the road at the Nusa Dua Complex where the conference was headquartered cars and their occupants were screened at both an outer perimeter when entering Nusa Dua and again the entrance gate of each hotel and conference venue. People without credentials certifying them as part of the conference were denied entrance to the entire area.
