Life Lived in a Cage

Life in Prison for Two Indonesian Women Caught in Bali Cocaine Bust

(10/14/2013) The Denpasar District Court sentenced two women found guilty of smuggling 2.5 kilograms of cocaine into Bali to life imprisonment on Thursday, October 3, 2103.

Chef Justice Hasoloan Sianturi declared the women, Yulianti and Vivi Veronika, guilty of receiving the cocaine from a man identified as Junaidi bin Ali Kanino who is undergoing a separate trial in a related case.

The sentence was more severe than the 13 year sentence demanded by State Prosecutors, but less than the option of death before a firing squad also at the disposal of the Court.

Their accomplice, Junaidi, was arrested at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport on March 9, 2013 after he landed on Malaysian Airline MH 715 from Kuala Lumpur with the narcotics concealed in a suitcase.

The drugs were given an estimated street value of Rp. 5 billion (US$435,000).

In a separate but interconnected trial, Dewi Khurmaeni was sentenced to six years in prison.
