Setting a Table for APEC

Restaurants in Nusa Dua Complex Not Sharing in the Tourism Income Generated by Bali APEC Conference

(10/7/2013) Restaurant operators in the Nusa Dua Complex at South Bali are not reaping a whirlwind of business despite the fact that surrounding hotels are running occupancy levels of 100% due to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference (APEC).

Tight security measure barring transient visitors to Nusa Dua and the crowded itineraries of cocktails and dinners already in place for APEC delegates have left eateries in and around Nusa Dua largely empty.

The State News Agency Antara quoted Suwirya, a restaurant manager in Nusa Dua, on Sunday, October 6, 2013, saying, “We are suffering and our turnover has gone down dramatically because the Nusa Dua area has been ‘sterilized’ and is under strict guard by security forces.”

Continuing, Suwirya said: “Usually every day our sales reach Rp. 10-20 million. But with this international event the best we can do is Rp. 2 million a day.”

Worst affected by the downturn in business is the grouping of bars and restaurants centered n the Bali Collection within the Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) enclave.

Suwirya said he hoped the government and organizers would consider the impact on area businesses when hosting future international events.

Lamenting further, he said: “No doubt the aim of the APEC Conference is to increase tourism. But it’s best if international events are not just held in Bali, but also in Jakarta.”

The restaurant operator claims the he has suffered losses in the tens of millions of Rupiah due to the APEC Conference in South Bali.
