Growth in Domestic Air Traffic Slowing. Roughly 55% of Bali Air Arrivals from Domestic Sources

(11/1/2013) The number of domestic passengers flying in Indonesia during the period January-September 2013 totaled 41 million, an increase of 1.92% over the totals reported for the same period in 2012.

These figures, provided by Bisnis.com, suggest that the period of  rapid expansion of domestic air travel in Indonesia is leveling off. The 1.92% rate growth for the first nine months of 2013 is substantially smaller that the 5.16% rate of growth recorded for the period January-September 2012.

Moreover, the rate of growth recorded for January-September 2011 was 22.7%, further underlining that the period of strong growth spurts in domestic travel is at an end.

Five major airports – Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta), Juanda (Surabaya), Ngurah Rai (Denpasar, Bali), Sultan Hasanuddin (Makassar) and Kualanamu (Medan) – generated 28.34 million domestic passengers during the first nine months of 2013 or 69% of all domestic traffic nationwide.

Domestic passengers flying through Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport January-September 2013 totaled 3.1 million. This total is roughly equivalent to projections that 55% of all visitors to Bali are domestic and that approximately 7 million tourists – both domestic and foreign, will visit Bali when the figures for 2013 are finalized.
