Indonesia Prepares to Open a Toll Road Connecting Merak-Jakarta-Surabaya Before End of 2018

Indonesian President Joko Widodo is optimistic that Jakarta and Surabaya will be connected by a continuous toll road by December 2018.

Quoted by the National News Agency Antara, President Widodo said, while inaugurating the Sragen-Ngawi sub-section of the highway on Wednesday, November 28, 2018: “I am very happy that this morning I will officially open the toll road between Solo and Ngawi with the opening of the segment Sragen-Ngawi. This means that soon, by the end of the year, and God willing, Jakarta and Surabaya will be connected.”

He said that the sections Pemalang to Batang, Batang to Semarang, Salatiga to Solo, and then Wilangan to Kertosono were finished and only awaiting inauguration. Adding: "Earlier, I asked the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) and the Director General who said all would be done by mid-December or the end of December 2018. They said I only need to find time to declare the roads open. For them to speak this way means that the road is almost completely finished."

While the exact toll for a car to drive from Jakarta to Surabaya is still under review, officials are estimating a toll fee of Rp. 600,000.
