President Issues Command that Early Warning Tsunami System by Activated Nationwide

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has ordered the Meteorological, Climate, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to create a nation-wide integrated early warning system for tsunamis.

As reported by the State News Agency Antara, the President’s orders came on the heels of a tsunami that struck the West Coast of Java on Saturday, December 22, 2018, that killed more than 430 and injured hundreds more.  

The President issued the order to BMKG to purchase an Early Warning System that can alert people to approaching tsunamis during a press conference held at the disaster site in West Java on Monday, December 24, 2018.

At the same occasion, President Widodo called on emergency evacuation teams to check all areas at risk from future development from erupting Mount Krakatau. The President also reminded visitors to the Sunda Straits to exercise extreme caution.

During his tour of the areas struck by the pre-Christmas tsunami, the President visited emergency relief posts were he met the evacuees and the injured.
