Austrian Tourist Dies in Diving Mishap at Nusa Penida, Bali
An Austrian tourist, Kerstin Korinek (35), was struck and killed by a dive boat operated by Lembongan Dive Adventures on Monday, April 23, 2018.

As reported by NusaBali, the woman suffered severe head injuries when the boat hit her as she surfaced from a dive at Mangrove Point at Nusa Penida Island. Rushed to the Surya Husada Hospital in Denpasar Korinek died from her injuries while being treated in the emergency room.

Meanwhile, the Captain of the Lembongan Dive Adventure Boat, I Kadek Ricahyana Putra, 32, is now in police custody and likely to be charged with involuntary manslaughter subject to a penalty of five years in prison.

Information collected by police suggest that Kerstin Korinek had sailed with two other tourists on a dive boat – Serendipity from the Bali Hai Pontoon at Nusa Penida at 1:45 pm to bound for Mangrove Point.

The woman had just surfaced from her first dive at 2:40 pm and was reportedly holding “signal sausage” to show her position when she was struck by the passing Lembongan Dive Adventure Boat.

The Austrian suffered severe head injuries in the collision.

She died later that afternoon at 6:35 pm at the Surya Husada Hospital in Denpasar.

Police continue to investigate the accident.
