Bali's Earthquake and Tsunami Detection Network Undergoing a Major Upgrade

The State News Agency Antara reports that Bali Governor Wayan Koster is supporting plans by the Meteorological, Climate and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to enhance earthquake and tsunami detections systems in Bali to be on an equal footing with similar systems in place for Indonesia’s capital of Jakarta.

During a recent meeting with the chief of BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati, Governor Koster said, “Of course, I fully support this plan and we appreciate efforts to bring this to fruition.”

Governor Koster said that buildings in Bali, such as hotels and public facilities, have been built to a legal standard to withstand earthquakes and to guarantee emergency access in the event of a natural disaster. Adding: “If needed, we can require that building permits in Bali (IMB) must include earthquake-proof building codes. In addition, we will intensify the socialization of disaster preparedness to the public.”

Dwikorita said the BMKG will install earthquake and tsunami detectors in new locations that include Bangli, Karangasem, Buleleng, and Nusa Penida Island (Klungkung) by mid-December. “Our goal is to complete the detection system and improve both detection and response time,” she said.

The BMKG Chief said that other improvements include a system that will detect both large and low-level earthquakes. New detection systems will be networked with a super-computer to prevent “hanging” when large amounts of urgent data is generated over a very short period.

Bali is also planned to become a national center for earthquake and tsunami detection, capable of playing a back-up role if the Jakarta-based warning system was put out of action by a natural disaster.
