Vietnam Seeking Sister City Status with Bali

Vietnam’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Pham Vinh Quang, has advanced the idea of creating a sister-city relationship between the Province of Bali and a suitable partner city in Vietnam.

As reported by, Ambassador Vinh Quang revealed his desire to create a sister-city link during a meeting their Bali’s Deputy-Governor Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati (Cok Ace) on Tuesday, October 30, 2018.

The Vietnamese Ambassador told Cok Ace that Vietnam’s and Bali’s cultures are both culturally unique and have been influenced by Chinese culture in times past and share a mutual desire to promote international tourism.

“In 2020 our government has targeted 13 million tourist visitors, a number still less that Indonesia’s target of 20 million tourists by 2019. Foreign tourist numbers coming to Vietnam continue to increase. We remain optimistic that are goals can be achieved,” said Ambassador Vinh Quang.

The Ambassador suggests Ho Chi Min City as a possible sister for Bali. In the past, he has proposed a sister city relationship between Hanoi for Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta, thereby uniting the two capitols. The Ambassador also endorses those seeking direct flights connecting Bali and Vietnam and has held preliminary talks with the Ministry of Transportation.

While Vietnam does not have a consulate in Bali, the Ambassador wants to open a “Vietnamese Corner” in Bali as an alternative to the creation of a formal consulate.

The Deputy Governor of Bali expressed all the plans of the Vietnamese Ambassador, particularly in the area of increasing tourism links and direct flight access.
